They're cheap, compared to, say, coins of equivalent rarity and age from America or Germany, simply because of the reduced demand. And, as is the case in most places, local demand is mostly for local coins rather than foreign coins.

As for coin ships, there's just one coins & collectables shop in Darwin - the NT is pretty barren, numismatics-wise. I've only seen a couple of collectors from there on the forums. I think the next nearest coin dealer to Darwin is in Mackay, 2800 km away. Perth has several coin dealers, as well as a couple of active coin clubs in the greater Perth area. Plus of course the Perth Mint.

So considering I managed to score a 20 kopek 1914 in MS state from the US for just about $3, maybe I could score a rarer date for that much too? haha so what local coins are most coveted? I have only taken a passing glance at pre- and post-WWII coins from Australia and NZ but never seriously considered collecting them.

Gee lol wouldn't buying online be a much better option then? except from the US of course. I'll be sure to keep a look out for them the next time I'm there. Perth's a wonderful city, been there 3 times and I still find it a nice destination for a little vacation. Ah yes, that's the one I've seen people discussing about on a local forum. If I'm not wrong, I should expect to benefit most from the annual silver coin releases of the Perth Mint, apart from China. Gotta save up though....

Odd the international trade thing. I've not experienced (nor am I aware of) any problems getting coins shipped from the US to England or coins from Australia. It's been a while since I sold anything to someone in the US, but again, had no problems getting it to them.

For British coins, there are potential bargains in the US, both in terms of mis-attributed coins and the apparent lack of home interest in raw (unslabbed).

There is of course the flip side which is that some American dealers seem to think that anything a few hundred years old must be worth a corresponding number of $$.

As with collecting any coins, it's a matter of knowing your stuff when you buy.

As for coins from overseas ... I know it's not where the majority of interest lies, but think it would be very sad if the day ever came when the only coins you could collect were those from your home country. But there are hints it's starting to head that way in some places ...

That is strange... suppose its like jackpot, either it goes or it doesn't for your coin lol that I can attest to. I just got a 1932 and 1940 penny for at least a few dollars below, maybe even just half of their combined catalog value, although I did take care to examine the coin to validate the seller's grading. ebay helps obviate the need to deal with those ignorant dealers, which in my case is extremely helpful. Wouldn't like all the hassle of this that and other. my first experience with a local dealer was already bad enough anyway haha.

What winds of change are brewing over your end that makes you say so? Or is this hobby the next to get under serious scrutiny?
