Ok, that is a great feature. So I've been scanning the four different Canon model on ebay and trying to cross-compare various review on the different models. However, I feel I have made myself more lost . What are some of the different features across the models specific for coin macro photography? Which one has the highest quality pixelation? Which model is the most user friendly for a beginner? Which model did you use to shoot those fabulous sample pictures? Sorry for the exacting questions, but I feel as if I need a guide to get me though this unexplored jungle. thanks in advance, Eric.

Eric,
I used a T2i for the images I posted. I chose that camera because it has video capability, SDXC capability and a larger screen. I wanted to use it for more than just coins.

If you want to just use it for coins, any of the 4 will work. Here is a quick comparison chart is used.

I'm using the 1000D Rebel XS works great for me. Did a lot with the lights defused at the lens and right now I'm trying axial lighting and think I've may have got it, well good enough for me.

ok thank you ngs for that very useful chart. I too, want to use the camera for more than coins, and it seems that the T2i is the best option for both world. I will go look for a suitable listing and ebay and try to snag one.

mcschilling, I am glad the XS works well for you! I think it how well you can manipulate the camera to make the best shots, not the highest model or having the most specs. Good luck mastering that thing.

The XS is what I generally recommend for coin photography. The T2i and XS will produce essentially the same image for web publishing at 864x864, though the XS has an advantage for DOF as it has a larger (bigger #) DLA.

RMPSRPMS, Good point, yea I am most looking to pixel quality (sharpness) and ability to capture MS copper well. I will look into the XF, especially considering the price for the T2i is 2x the price of an XS.

Eric. Ray (rmpsrpms) is the man here, hopefully you take a lot from him as I have. A few points of clarification, it is the XS you are looking for, not the XF and the price of the T2i body only should be around $150 vs the XS at around $100 on ebay. You may have to watch some auctions to get a good price.

Ray, what advantages does the T2i have over the XS. If I am not mistaken, you have a T2i too.

Thanks!

Sorry, just got back from traveling...

The T2i has a bigger sensor, so has the advantage that you get a little bigger final image when displayed on a monitor.

I use a T2i but I have removed the AA filter to improve sharpness a little. I still need to downsize by 2x to minimize the Bayer sensor resolution problems, same as any DSLR (except Sigma).

Thanks for the advice ngs428. Sorry about the typo; probably thinking too much about XF coins lol.

I did a pretty reasonable search for the TI2 but most the BIN's are well over 200 for the body only. Probably have to find a good auction. There is one for 140$, but under the condition that the camera is not guaranteed to work and there are no returns. too risky for me. I also noticed many camera sellers have very little or no feedback: Should that be an object of concern?

And Ray, does the larger final image equatel to any better image clarity when the image is posted on ebay after downsizing 2x? According to the chart, the megapixel comparison is 18 for the TI2 to the 10.1 for the XS. What does this mean in terms of final image quality?

Thanks for all the support and help,
Eric

Final image quality is similar between the two, given at least 2x downsizing. The bigger MP count on the T2i seems compelling, but keep in mind it is at the price of smaller pixels, meaning more diffraction effects. The DLA (diffraction limited aperture) of the T2i is f6.7, while for the XS it is f10.2. This means you can stop-down the lens on an XS more than on the T2i before seeing diffraction effects, so you get a bit better depth of field. But same time the image is smaller, so there is a tradeoff. Which is "better" depends on what you're trying to do.

Eric, this T2i does not look too bad..

Little or no feedback could be a concern. There are enough out there that you could find one that suits your needs.

RMPSRPMS- Understood, so the tradeoff is a larger image for the T2i with more diffraction compared to the XS that has a smaller image but less diffraction and greater depth of field. My goal for the camera is to post quality images for ebay. Do you know which would be more suitable for ebay listings?

ngs428- That is probably the best one on ebay for price and quality. I first still need to decide which camera I will purchase, but if I decide on the T2i, I will quickly snatch it up. Thank you for doing the searching for me!

That T2i looks "OK" but likely has high shutter count. The rubber doesn't come loose very easy on the T2i.

The T2i and XS will give essentially the same ebay images. For ebay, you will likely downsize to 864 tall. The T2i needs to downsize 4x while XS 3x to give the same image. Very hard to tell which camera they come from once you have made the final images the same size.
