JeyRey2000, did you say SP? Specimen strikes from 1950 are fairly common, but they have blinding mirror fields and devices, fully struck with very square rims. Your coin looks like it has a weaker strike, with the rims and matte-like appearance of a business strike. The colour looks odd on the coin, with the areas around the legends and devices having more brightness, as if the photo has over-saturuated by light, perhaps indicating that it is not 100% Red?

Grade wise, if you don't penalize for the weaker strike, I would have said MS-64+...

I tend to be somewhat sarcastic at times! I will have the coin in hand soon so I will be able to see the true colour.

I agree with SPP. Something is off on that coin, and it isn't just the photo/lighting. Why is the cheek so "grainy" looking? The mint lustre in the devices contrasted with the darker fields is usually indicative of a past cleaning, or at best mild circulation.

I haven't experimented with dipping copper (it doesn't end well), but it seems like this might be what happens to a red-brown copper cent after a strong chemical dip.

I do see what you mean poker man. I got this on ebay from someone that has been selling red cents from 1920-1952 for almost 6 months or more every week. I have had suspicions of his coins being cleaned before and would like to understand more what you mean.

Thanks

I was thinking that the king must have been chilly for that portrait because he looks like he has goosebumps.....:)

It does look like a regular business strike to me as well.

Usually when cleaned, the legend is darker than the field because it is more difficult to get in between. This coin seems to be the opposite, with the field being darker than the legends.

I've never been accused of being smart... but my take on this coin would fall in the AC category. Bad haircut for a starter.

Contact marks on the cheek and hair on the far back of head. No higher than MS63.

Ok folks, so I got he coin today and in my limited opinion it looks to have been whizzed. At one angle it looks absolutely stunning and then shift the light and there are very slight hairlines all over the coin. I have done some sanding work before so I know when something looks like it's been sanded with a tool.

Now the hard part, to tell the seller I think his coin is whiz zed and share his ebay name to ward off others if he doesn't admit to a mistake.

Play hardball - you should not have to pay for shipping for both ways. If the seller does not own up, leave the feedback that you feel is appropriate - and, I'll make you a deal.

I use coins like this for teaching purposes, and I don't have a nicely whizzed George VI cent. I do have a BU roll of 1950 cents, and I'll cherry pick a BU Red 1950 MS-63 for you - in exchange for the whizzed coin.

Let us know the outcome, and send me a PM if the seller balks at your response.

Sent the seller a message so curious to see what he says. It's crazy because at one angle the coin looks great but then tilt it and then the hairlines are quite evident. Without a good loop it cannot be seen with naked eye!

I'll keep y'all up to date!
