I have mentioned before how long ago before the modern age it was terribly difficult for the average collector to find Julio Claudian issues for reasonable prices. While I have seen some dealers asking 'silly' prices today I have seen more than a few on ebay going for half !(or less)

Back when the 'shows' were my only option I bought a Germanicus AE As for a premium price. When I brought it home it dawned on me that it was one of these "tooled" coins with fields that were definitely "smoothed"

No thank you !

Fortunately it was a friend (dealer) who sold it to me and I had no trouble bringing it back (6 months later of course).
I bought the chariot one instead !

Well look what I snagged (sniped if you will!) on ebay

Patience-Is-A-Virtue-.......-But-25-Years-Is-A-Long-Time-!

While I was savoring the sweet smell of success I threw a bid at a second offering ...... just for 'giggles'.

Patience-Is-A-Virtue-.......-But-25-Years-Is-A-Long-Time-!

Patience-Is-A-Virtue-.......-But-25-Years-Is-A-Long-Time-!

Drusus AE As AD22

While not as 'buff' as the one I already have it does have a better portrait. I really wasn't expecting to win it either.
So after 25 years I finally got my Germanicus portrait As !
And including the Drusus ...... the price was the same as I paid for the one Germanicus when Ronald Reagan was the Prez !

Would have been less but the seller refused to combine the shipping ! I think he was annoyed at what he got.
A better photo might have helped !

And a hey nanny nanny and a hot cha cha !

Germanicus has that odd indentation below the chin. As there is no corresponding mark on the reverse
(lines up with the O in POT) I believe it was loose piece of bronze that found its way onto the blank before being stamped or had welded itself to the die.
Drusus is a bit rough around the edges but I thought it was a good deal.
When the little 'cretin' sent the invoice with 24 euros shipping ..... I hesitated.
But a good deal is hard to pass.
So it wasn't a grand slam anymore with that tacked on.
But still a bases clearing triple !

I am unfamiliar with coins of this period.
What does the large SC indicate?
My quest is to know everything, and fear I may run out of time.
Thanks

They are both very nice types, I especially like the Drusus example.
The photos appear good, so I am not sure if it was that quality which may have "not got the seller as much as he wanted".

Experienced collectors in any field of Roman coins are few.

To the lay person looking at the Germanicus coin, the obverse will scare them due to that "dent" in the lower left field.
Also to them, when a coin looks "too good" to them it must mean it is a fake. This is not always so, and so they miss out on good quality coins such as these.

For the postage (shipping) cost, even if it was Registered, the seller should have combined the postage cost.

This is the sellers actual photo.
If its one thing I have learned by pedaling all my 'junk' on ebay its how to take a decent photo !

Patience-Is-A-Virtue-.......-But-25-Years-Is-A-Long-Time-!

I have and old 'yard sale' floor lamp with 4 incandescent bulbs (multi directional lighting is key) with an old fold up dinner tray set up with an old Hawaiian shirt (black with purple and yellow pattern !) draped over it. Add on a 6 year old Nikon digital camera that has an 'incandescent' correction setting and voila!

Highly Professional !

Oh!
Well, your photos are fantastic.
A knowledgeable person can make good photos, regardless of the age of the camera.
The seller's photo is awful, no wonder it put off the lay folk.

I can see why people held back based on the sellers photo. Knowing myself I probably wouldn't have touched it. It is amazing the difference a good picture makes. Now if only I had a camera that could take them!

Two awesome, awesome coins. It is unfortunate the seller didn't combined shipping but oh well what can ya do.

I really like the lettering the Romans used during this early period before the legends became huge and they needed tiny letters. Very clear and easy to read.
