Very nice!

As for a grade, that will have to come from the other. I just came to see the photo.

Better than average, nice coin. I'd go MS-65 on this one.

It has better than average luster for a 1978-P, but I'd like a stronger strike and a less abraded truncation. I think this is MS-65

Unless they grade these easier because they are so large I'm gonna go MS63/64. I see a lot of nicks on the obverse and it looks like there are some rim dings on reverse. However, this is my first stab at grading ANY large dollar so... educate me please! :) Love the luster on this bad boy!

Somebody else will have to educate you, since I don't know much about Ikes. I can tell you that planchet issues that weren't struck out during minting are not supposed to hurt a coins technical grade. Ikes are well known for having many of these planchet hits because of the hard planchets. The striking pressures required for a fully struck ike are substantially higher than that of a large silver dollar, for example.

I ended up just holding onto this, mostly because of the hit on the back of the head behind the ear. If that wasn't there...

Fade - Thanks for that, makes sense. I didn't realize Ike's had that issue. Wonder if they have had the hardest strike pressure of any American coin? Obviously silver large dollars are softer and the Ike is the only clad large dollar right?

I believe they required the highest striking pressures of any US coin, yes. Sure somebody will correct me if I'm wrong.
