Just wondering what this small number is on the bottom right hand side of all the denominations I've seen 27, 13, 81, 12

I believe that is the number of the plate used to print the bill. More experienced folks will correct me if I'm wrong.

Will this plate number remain the same through a particular denomination run or could, say, the current $5 bill have different plates during its print run? If so, do people also collect by plate numbers?

There will be several different FPN's and BPN's for every denomination...
I'm not sure if there's anyone out there that collects all the different plate numbers in denomination or series.. that certainly would be something different..
In the previous journey series the FPN and BPN were different... this series the FPN and BPN are the same... (certainly makes it a lot easier when entering numbers into the data base...)

The tiny numbers found on both faces and backs of the notes of this issue are related to the position of the note on a sheet. They are not identifying numbers for the plate, as formerly.

AgCoinAU.. there are lots of collectors who collect the full series of bills including the plate numbers. There are several issues of the 1986 Bird $5.00 where the plate number's colour changed for a short period of time, and created a rarity of one specific colour of the plate # (back blue plate #). The 1967 issue has a very large variety of front and back plate numbers that are even listed in the Charlton catalogue. As they are a realitively inexpensive series, it makes it cost effective to collect the full series of prefix and plate numbers.
I knew a collector who has almost the entire set of them, and gets VERY excited when he can find a missing plate/prefix combo.

Quote: there are lots of collectors who collect the full series of bills including the plate numbers I know there was an article somewhere that suggested this as a possibility for collectors. For the more current series of notes I think this would become a huge investment of dollars if you are collecting all prefixes and also their plate numbers.

Well rainbowjaz I can see why there's confusion but you wanted to know what these numbers are and the correct terminology for them is "POSITION NUMBERS" they have not been used to indicate plate numbers for decades. You can learn more here: http://wiki.cdnpapermoney.com/index...ting_Layouts
