It's a scan alright. You can tell by the light direction. I doubt the coin looks like it's nicotine stained in hand.

The front isn't that bad. But the back is just ugly.

Aren't fingerprints supposed to be grade limiting marks?

I humbly take a pass despite the lofty certified technical grade ... IMHO this coin is ugly.

My point exactly and is why I mentioned it in my original posting. Based on that alone I assume that the current condition of the coin is not the same as when it was slabbed. That fingerprint I would guess "developed" in the slab.

I have seen a LOT of early mint set quarters with ugly toning AND fingerprints like those slabbed at those high grades by the TPG's. I don't think the prints developed after slabbing. It is just a very high grade ugly coin.

I'm not a fan of fingerprints on coins (as if there is a fan base).
Some types of toning can be attractive, but I'm not feeling this one at all.

MatthewVincent mentions dipping, would a dip remove a print?

I ask because I have a common Peace dollar, BU, with a print that I bought a long time ago
thinking acetone would remove it. That is when I found out about the permanence of fingerprints.

Here's another buy the coin and not the holder lesson.

Spotting on obverse and reverse, but it's a PCGS PR70DCAM First Strike!
