I have this coin of Queen Victoria ,1 penny 1854 .The 4 is over the 3 of 1853 .Seaby British Coins 1982 mentions only 1854 in number 3948 , Krause2009 has under number 739 3 variants. Why this difference?I can t believe it is only because my Seaby is to old.How would you grade this coin? What to think about the value given by Krause ?British-Coins,-Queen-Victoria

The 4/3 issue I'll leave to someone more knowledgable.

But for the Seaby, well, 1982 is over 30 years ago! And as far as I know the enthusiasm for varieties, overnumbers and errors is quite a recent one. Yes, there were people who collected such things in 1982. But I suspect they relied on specialist books such as Peck's English Copper, Tin And Bronze Coins in the British Museum.

Seaby (and its replacement Spink) was just a general price guide, originally based on the stock they had to sell.

If it's any help, my (2006) Spink gives the price for an 1854/3 penny (S.3948) in Fine as £12

Why do you say it is a 4/3? I can't see anything to suggest this. The 4/3 is also only recorded with a plain trident reverse, so this would be the first OT 1854/3 penny recorded. I would look again and recheck what you can definitely see, and not what might be.

to Tom Goodheart : thanks for your explication , I received the book 25 years ago and I didn t know this . At the end , it will be more complicated than ancient coins .
to Battersea Dogs Home : I was comparing my coin with pictures on internet , because there is something wrong with the 4 .There I found the same coin (but very better quality) by Heritage coin auction lot 13519 and by http://www.coinsandstamps.com FC 9436 .The coin is well better in the hand than on the pic.

You might want to consider a new book if you're interested in British coins antwerpen?

This one (Collectors' Coins GB) is cheaper than Spink (which replaced Seaby) and is also available as a download for kindle or other electronic reader if you have one. http://www.rotographic.com/collecto..._britain.htm

Handy if you like to carry your reference material around with you!

A worn coin can make things look differently, I suspect what you think you're seeing is from the wear. Getting a close up or microscope view would help, but as above, known varieties only exist with specific die pairings. I would grade the OBV as Good to Near Fine. The bottom serif of the 4 has a wave in it that wouldn't correspond to a 3 as it's going in a different direction

An old post but not a 1854/3 as most are not ,should show to both sides at the top of the four.

Otherwise just a rubbed/re cut out four.

They are quite scarce for a good one although lots wrongly listed.

The "Coin Yearbook 2017" ( which has only recently appeared on UK bookshop shelves ), gives the following values for 1d coins in F grade:

1854 £8

1854/3 £14

Obviously this is only a guide, but it gives a general idea.
