1981-S Proof Quarter - "uni" Variety Or Minting/Strike Issue

mgillette Valued Member United States 374 Posts	Posted 01/25/2014 2:21 pm I looked through about 7 different 1981 proof sets this morning and I noticed, and thought it peculiar that on the reverse, in the word "UNITED", the N and I are always touching one another. As in: I thought that was normal until I ran across this one: Is there any significance to this? What would be the difference in the minting processes? Report this Post to the Staff

Jayman931 Pillar of the Community United States 2651 Posts	Posted 01/25/2014 5:02 pm There are Type 1 and Type 2 sets for that year but I thought that just had to do with the mint marks....maybe you are on to something because they definitely look like different reverses. coop Bedrock of the Community United States 62064 Posts	Posted 01/25/2014 9:00 pm Looks like a heavy die polishing make the letters smaller on the second image. I found one that must have received some die damage and when they polished the die down the letters were reduced in size. Report this Post to the Staff
