1915-S Barber half dollarM 1.6m / R1 Looks like a hint of PVC on reverse, should be to handle it with a light acetone dip. I'm in the VF30 camp on this one.. -Any thoughts appreciated, thanks for looking! (Sample photograde for ballparking..)

A little too much meat on the wings, thighs and wreath for a 20 IMHO..

This compares quite favorably with PCGS VF30's, so I'll agree with your estimate. I'm market grading, of course.
That PVC probably warrants more than casual concern; it'll come off easily enough but we have to hope the color on the coin is patina and not stuff the acetone will remove. And I hope it doesn't end up looking unnaturally bright between the arrows. All the same, it has to be done. It's a *beautiful* look, and a coin I'd be happy to own.

I think it makes VF-30 as well. Would love to see pics of the coin after the acetone bath

I will go vf30, maybe 35. I wouldn't bother with acetone because though it will remove the PVC, I agree that you risk losing some of the beautiful color.
You should be happy to have that beauty, regardless of the technical grade. Too bad about the PVC but hey, what can you do.

All valid points, I'm leaning toward not messing with her now. Since the acetone affects organic matter it would probably take away from some of her wholesome toning. I'll keep an eye on her, as long as the green doesn't worsen I think it adds character. If it does start to worsen I'll give her a light bath. Appreciate all the input! -Ron

Left alone, the PVC will destroy this coin. Every single time, always. Without fail. No exceptions.
Your choice.

Solid VF30 with a chance at 35. I'd give her the needed acetone bath.

an acetone bath won't remove the toning.

Depends on what is under the green PVC. Acetone will remove organic material. Might try just dabbing lightly with acetone on a Qtip, as it doesn't seem too bad yet, hopefully won't mess her up. SuperDave is scaring the heck out of me..

Quote: SuperDave is scaring the heck out of me.. It'll take years, but the end is inevitable if that's PVC plasticizer infection. And it wouldn't have had to be started all that long ago; heck, those holders weren't exactly around when the coin was minted. On the bright side, it can get pretty nasty before the coin is permanently affected:
