I'm looking to buy my first detector soon for under £200 in the UK.
Seems like the Garrett ACE 2500 might be a reasonable one but I'm not aware of the differences between any of the brands. I suppose for that reason I should just choose one being bought by many detectorists - that should be fairly reliable . Also, could I have some basic info' on how deep these things will look?

thanks,
Matt

Hi Matt

The ace 250 is a good machine ,,no doubt .

as for depth there are several things which come into play , soil type, moisture, minerals and the target type and size all play a role on how deep the detector will shoot.

but as an average for the entry level machines ,,I would not expect much over eight inches on a consistent basis.

I can recommend c-scope models as that was my first ever buy & I got good finds with them. Also look at 'Whites electronics'.

Don't waste your money on anything besides a Minelab.
White's are ok, but lack depth.
Buy a Minelab and do it right from the beginning.
You will thank me later.

I've had both Whites & C-Scope & never found they lacked depth. I've made many a good find with both, ranging from Celtic/Roman to modern day finds. Price is obviously a factor on how good a detector you'll get but then again so is how you use it. The best machine in the world in the hands of someone who doesn't know what they are doing is useless.

Try looking in the 'Searcher' & 'Treasure Hunter' magazines. WH Smith stock them. You'll get good feedback & a price guide from there.
