but the lettered edge was a pattern coin? am I right?
No the Saint-Gaudens double eagles are all supposed to have a lettered edge.
What bothers me about this coin is there appears to be little or no wear on the high points yet the lettering and rims seem to be a bit "weak". These coins took eleven blows from the coining press in order to bring up the high relief central details. The high details on this coin ARE struck up, so why after 11 blows are the lower details around the rim weak? Also if you blow up the images, why aren't the surfaces smooth after 11 blows with new dies? Seems odd.
