Yes, you really shouldn't go back with hundreds of them.

@wolfman-11, i guess I could sell you some but I would check your local banks and/or check asyn on ebay as they sell these very cheap with free shipping and they usually have alot of years to choose from

The three local banks I deal with didn't know what a 50cent piece was and I tried a new bank just today. I pulled a 1968 nickel dollar and half dollar out of my pocket to show them what I wanted, and they asked me if these are still accepted as cash!

I don't know what Dollarama's are like where you live, but here, they are often staffed by....the lower tier of people in terms of education/intelligence. I know, that sounds terrible, but that's the best way I can describe it. So I am far from surprised that the 50 cent coin confused them.
Regarding a businesses right to refuse a coin, I would simply walk out and leave the amount on the table. I am a shopper, and when you tell me I owe you $26.20, if all I have are 52 50 cent coins and an 1858 20 cent piece, then I consider the transaction complete.
So if I leave the store with my goods, and the money on the counter, what are they going to do? Call the police? And arrest me with what, disobeying store policy?

@Wade: I see lots of immigrants working in banks today. I'm never surprised anymore when bankers tell me there are no $2 bills or 50 cents pieces - like I'm making it up.
But if you're going to Dollarama without all of your nickels you're doing it wrong! :P

I'm sure the discussion has been revisited many times but my recollection is that no more than $20 in coin has to be accepted and even that is at the discretion of the store, it can refuse any coin or bill.
Furthermore it is not limited to Dollarama, my credit union would not take nickel dollars in; they sent me to a bank.
I will not drone on that the bank tellers were unacquainted with 50 cent coins
Ah the pleasures of growing old...

@Anjohl: I see what you're trying to say, but if both parties in a transaction are not happy then the deal is off, period. It wouldn't be advisable to actually do that.

But tell me, what would I be charged with? I have the goods, and the store has the money. There is no law broken.

That is irrelevant. You have no onus to retain proof of purchase, the store has the onus to prove theft.

For the sake of perpetuating an inane argument:
There is no contract (agreement) if the seller does not accept your payment. If you simply leave your 'coins' on the counter and take the goods, you have committed theft...and littering on their property.

^ Was going to say that. No bill of sale, no sale. You can't just force a sale onto a business. It's not a matter of breaking laws, it's about being courteous to the people who offer you a service. Would you go into a restaurant and start cooking your own food - of course not - but it's a restaurant you say!
@gidjit: Do you still patronize the store or did you take your money somewhere else?

@Petersun i dont plan on bringing hundreds of them at once but I will keep bringing hundreds of them over time, the 50c and dollars will be more common than the loonie and toonie for that store
