This dollarama thing makes me chuckle. It sounds like something I would do to make a point. I just hope you don't spend the dollars and halves I need, before I get the chance to email my wish list.
I used to live down there in Milton where there were many banks to choose from, but in the great white north things are different. I do have a credit union saving pennies for me now which is cool, I still need a few of them too.

so I went to dollarama again and finally the manager and the 2 tellers who turned us away for spending fake nickle 50c and dollar coins were working, although the manager didnt see me neither did one of the tellers but I did manage to get the other teller, my bill came to $2.69 so I handed over 6 50c pieces, without hesitation the girl accepted them but had problems counting them. she attempted to count them 3 times and on the 4th try she gave up and asked me how much I gave her!!lol

gidjit... You're hilarious... If I was that manager I would NEVER accept these from you... would keep you coming back to the store trying to prove a point each time as you buy... I play ignorant and increase my sales.. YAR!
Seriously though... instead of using them up at the dollarstore I think you should sell them to some of the users on here... seems like there's enough people that would want some..

@gidjit
I hate it when people like you push so hard just to make your point.
I would completely refuse you too, especially if you kept coming back to my store trying to use questionable currency. Even if I knew that it was "valid" currency, I'd still refuse you because of the hassle you're causing.
Please, stop calling corporate offices and complaining, and just take your coins into the bank if you want to spend them. Because otherwise, I promise you: those Dollarama employees think you're loonie.

That makes a whole lotta sense now too.... the kids want to spend 'em... and you give 'em a little here and there and they go to the one location where they can buy stuff...
Question.. is there a convience store close to you ... where you could bring up this issue... tell them that you have kids and they want to spend these coins... ask if they will accept them...
Not really thinking outside the box just trying to offer some other alternative than fighting with this manager and their employees b/c that could get tiresome...
Or.. another way is to develop a relationship with this manager... and say to him/her you will buy them back off of them! This way the kids are happy.. the manager gets the money in a form he finds acceptable and you recycle the coins for awhile and don't run out!
Just explain to him that it's your kids that get a kick out of spending these coins b/c they so different but at the end of a week or month you would be willing to come by and buy back all the coinage used... when your kids aren't around...
That the best solution I have... good luck man...
@New collector... sometimes it's better to find a way to laugh at a situation ... there's already enough "hate" in the world....ease up a bit... we're all friends here.

yes my kids also goto the corner store where these coins are accepted all though dollar store has alot more for alot less, thats why this thread got started as my kids were told these coins were fake, that is why I went to spend them to tell them they were real and after I was also told they were fake thats when I contacted HQ , and I keep going back to try to spend them to see if they will now be accepted instead of having my kids rejected again

@AgCoinAu thats is a good idea you have, if I worked at dollarama I would accept these coins just so I can hand them out to other people! cause face it we all get excited when we get something unusual in our change

My project is as follows:
I am going to go to Chapters here in NFLD Canada with US Money, and insist on paying the US cover price. The point is the protest, it is not our problem that you frontline staff get irritated. Every company that ever did anything wrong had frontline staff. Should we have allowed them to continue their abusive practices out of fear of irritating some cash monkey?

I just don't get it. O_O But why?
We don't live in the USA. Why would they have to accept your US legal tender for the US posted price? If it is that important to get the US posted price, go cross border shopping to take advantage of lower US prices? :/
It's things like this that irritate people like me who work in customer service. We're made out to look like the bad ones if you we don't bow down to whatever the customer demands.

@gidjit I didn't mean to be rude, but I must admit it struck a nerve with me when I read that you're being so persistent with a store, just because they didn't accept your coins before. No, I do not work for Dollarama, but I have worked many years as a cashier and as a retail store manager. In combination with my appreciation for coin collecting, this gives me a unique insight into your situation. Yes I fully understand that the coins you tried to use are legal tender. It's cool you're being a supportive parent, and that you want to make them feel special, but it's also important to make them understand that:
- Most people do not have an appreciation for rare and old coins...
- Especially younger folk, who are area a large percentage of cashiers.
- Because of this, they will be reluctant to accept "strange" coins
If you explain it to them properly, I'm sure they won't be nearly as disappointed as you expect. From the perspective of a store manager: Sure, if I had a personal interest in the coins I'd accept them and pay for the difference with cash. But for any other purpose, accepting the coins would mean I'd have to go through the hassle of exchanging them at the bank (which we all know can be a similar experience like yours at Dollarama, based on the coin). In big stores, procedure is that the day's cash and change is put in a sealed bag and deposited...any irregular currency would complicate the matter. Additionally, working out some sort of "agreement" with the manager where the kids pay with the coins, and you buy/exchange them later, is even more trouble for the worker. Managers are accountable for a day's transactions, and small adjustments like that are a headache. In conclusion, your best bet: Try at an independently owned business like a convenience store, build a rapport with the owner. Try to focus your persistence on more worthy endeavors, things aren't always the way they should be, and don't give cashiers who refuse your coins the "pfft...you're a fool for not knowing" attitude. ----- @Anjohl That's dumb.
