Cutting edge technology? That's how they get it 12 sided perhaps.

Awesome! If it's bimetallic - even better. I love non-round bimetallics

Osborne was no doubt aware that the latest Royal Mint survey results were due in barely 2 weeks to show a sharp fall in the incidence of fake £1s as collectors withdraw far more than 2 million from circulation, and with law enforcers very much gaining the upper hand. And then, he would no longer have this card to play. So who will be the first to calculate what 3d, from when last legal tender, would be worth in today's money? @ harrythecollecter, you do realise 3d bits are smaller than a current £1 coin?

I does look nice, they also need to do something about all the fakes, its getting silly so many are floating about now. Looks like it could be a nightmare for the coin operated machine industry though

Quote: show a sharp fall in the incidence of fake £1s , I have seen only around 3 fakes in 7 months or so ...whereas prior to that I was getting almost one a month

Bout time they did something to counter all the fake £1 coins, only the other day on here was I talking about the effect all the fakes must have on our economy. It looks nice as-well great design, so this gives us a few years to collect all variations of £1 coins before they cease to circulate :).
Regarding the picture above I'd grade it MS-70 :D.

It'll probably be Charles' head by then incidentally, his *second* portrait I believe?
Then, precedent would seem to say he will be inscribed as "CAROLUS III" rather than "CHARLES III". Queen Elizabeth I it seems was inscribed as "ELIZABETH" so the present queen did not anglicise that.

More likely Georgivs VII, though I'm betting on Liz being on the obverse of that coin in 2017

Yep, including the fakes that caused this whole situation I wonder what its metallic composition will be ......I have a sneaky suspicion there will be plated steel in the composition of this new £1

I do feel a little sad their won't be a new £1 note instead lol, I wonder what the costs would be between a note and coin-with regards to production. Never the less I love the new look £1 pound, and yeah I guess it's properties will be the same as our £2 coin.

Well I stand corrected, fake £1s are up again according to the Mint: "The figure had risen from 2.74pc to 3.04pc in the last survey alone, in November" http://www.telegraph.co.uk/finance/...-1-coin.htmlStrange as the previous year's survey actually reported 2.86%.

I for one am very sad to see the old £1 coin go. It was one of my all time favorites. I loved how small and heavy it was. Perhaps they'll make fewer commemoratives since IMHO that encourages the counterfeiters?
