Galba has always been one of my favourite emperors. Not because he was a great emperor but because I found his assassination so interesting. Particularly the story of Sempronius Densus, the sole Praetorian who stood form while his colleagues turned on Galba or disappeared from the scene.

Plutarch wrote of Sempronius Densus
Quote:
No man resisted or offered to stand up in his defence, save one only, a centurion, Sempronius Densus, the single man among so many thousands that the sun beheld that day act worthily of the Roman empire, who, though he had never received any favour from Galba, yet out of bravery and allegiance endeavoured to defend the litter. First, lifting up his switch of vine, with which the centurions correct the soldiers when disorderly, he called aloud to the aggressors, charging them not to touch their emperor. And when they came upon him hand-to-hand, he drew his sword, and made a defence for a long time, until at last he was cut under the knees and brought to the ground

Galba was beheaded and hacked up with around 120 people claiming to be the one who took his life. Each looking for favour from Otho. When Otho was deposed not long after Vitellius received the list the name and had them executed.

Sempronius' final stand is considered the only heroic act done in Rome on that day and because of his 'act worthy of Rome' he is remembered in history. In regards to his final stand Cassius Dio wrote
Quote:
This is why I have recorded his name, for he is most worthy of being mentioned.

Not a bad way to be remembered.

Very nice coin, I've always wanted one of his coins but haven't been able to find one I can afford. That was a strange time The Year of Four Emperors. Sometimes it really doesn't pay to be the man at the top.

Here is a perfect example of where a lower grade Roman coin is obviously NOT a fake. The letters for example, where they have survived fully, have a quite sharp definition.

ANY coin of Galba is worth having in a collection of Roman coins.

Great acquisition ! As mentioned above it requires all of 1.5 seconds to determine within 99.99% that this is the real deal.
Bit of surface corrosion but it does not detract much from the portrait. What a profile too ! Galba was one tough nut and it shows.
You won't ever regret this pickup !
As I am dimly aware of how many 'pesos' you counted out for this one I can without hesitation say

"Stop ! Thief !"

For what you paid you might have bought around 5 nice antoniniani of Gordian III .......
Not a hard choice is it

I would add that while it does not really make the VF level it does have most of the attributes

Full legends .... Great portrait ..... Well centered ..... Minimal wear etc.

I would give it a high end F ! If not for the surface corrosion it would be a VF and have set you back $400-500 !

Thanks for the compliments! I am ecstatic to have a decent Galba in my collection.

Also FR I do feel like I stole this one a little bit. The dealer had originally listed it in his store before putting it up for auction and with the coin he included a printout of the attribution and other detals including what he had listed it for in his shop. I paid about half of what he was asking in his store.
