I'm thinking it is not wire, but thread or fiber. I found an example of this a year ago where the thread/fiber was still attached on the coin.

I had opened an OBW roll of cents and wondered why this coin looked so ugly. Then I check under the scope and I have found what has been causing the thread like lines on coins for sometime. This maybe what had found its way in to the chamber and blocked a full strike on your coin. Here are a few other examples:

Thanks Coop!! The angle of the thread/string (whatever it was) seemed to parallel the bust profile. Just a coincidence, but it did play on my mind given the MD on the ear and LIBERTY. I'm exploring a higher resolution picture to see if there's anything else with this. I may stick this one in a flip though: with the investment of time on this cent, it's probably worth holding onto from a learning/conversational perspective. I appreciate the help!!

Good eye on that fiber / thin wire. I always say a coin is willing to tell you what happened to it, if you look closely enough.
