Well, it is a bit glossy too, not hairlined, just kind of glossy which makes me think it may have retoned over an ancient toning. So the ultimate question to be answered, does it meet Doug Winter's requirement of a "very rare" coin(according to his commentary in my first post)? Sure there are dozens available "in the world" but most are in strong hands (PCGS has certified 46 pieces as AU). That looks like a very nice AU50 that appears to be worth all of the $3,700 listed in PCGS' Price Guide. ANA #R3154474 Report this Post to the Staff

Doug winter is obviously correct. 1848 D mint is difficult to find original with a strike like that.
