My thought is the subdued obverse luster cost it at least 3 points and maybe 5. The detail is quite strong for early D-mint gold but PCGS is very tough on coins with reduced luster.

Au-55 would bump it up a few grand. I'd send it to be reconsidered by PCGS!
Rest in Peace

thanks guys!! Well, it is a bit glossy too, not hairlined, just kind of glossy which makes me think it may have retoned over an ancient toning. So the ultimate question to be answered, does it meet Doug Winter's requirement of a "very rare" coin(according to his commentary in my first post)?

In my estimation yes, very rare to see an AU piece such as yours. Sure there are dozens available "in the world" but most are in strong hands (PCGS has certified 46 pieces as AU). That looks like a very nice AU50 that appears to be worth all of the $3,700 listed in PCGS' Price Guide.

Wow I would be very happy to own that half eagle. Doug winter is obviously correct. 1848 D mint is difficult to find original with a strike like that. Any branch mint half eagles are more or less difficult to find original
