Hi everyone,

I'm back seeking some help on another coin.

While looking on ebay, I found this coin: http://www.ebay.ca/itm/291115816089...CHING_ACTIVE

I was wondering if the price is good for this type of coin.

Thanks again everyone.

Not Greek it is Macedonian it is from the 400s bc there were four kings during the time it was minted and I believe minted in Aegae the old capital of Macedonia prior to the change to Pella otherwise it is a great looking coin and in my opinion a bargain. On a side note that is what you learn after a month of being involved with ancient coins and off the top of my head pretty proud of myself to be honest haha.

P.s just checked it was minted 460bc to 400bc. The denomination is a trihemiobol (one and a half obols?) minted during four kings reigns. Also it was previously attributed to be issued at Eion in Macedonian Thrace tho I believe it was later suggested that it was minted in Aegae (maybe confusing this with the Bull Akanthos coin clarification would be appreciated on this). Anyway looks like I am still learning a bit about ancients then haha.

Take a close look at the size of that coin. It's a pretty coin, but it is very very small. If that's ok with you (I have smaller coins than that) then go for it, but I just don't want you to be surprised when you receive it.

I like the type and just bought one a few weeks ago.

BTW, posting coins which are currently up for auction is a risky thing to do.

If it is a "good deal" and if I or someone else was not aware of the auction and now wants the coin, you just drove up the price by creating more bidders. At any given point in time there are many unregistered lurkers here too-- perhaps trolling for just such tips.

To everyone here I recommend refraining from posting coins which are currently up for auction lest you spoil someone's bidding plans or create more competition. If you really want to buy the coin but don't know enough about it and if you don't have the time, experience, or patience to do the research, it is best to solicit opinions by private message.

I expect to catch flack for expressing this opinion. That's okay. :)

I've definitely thought that could happen when I've seen people posting auctions, and if someone posted a coin and I became interested in it (and if I bought coins on ebay which I avoid) then I wouldn't have any scruples about bidding on it.

If you're wondering what the going price is on a coin, most of them can be found in various VCoins or the Forvm store to compare prices, or potentially you can use wildwinds although be careful because you're looking generally at just one datapoint. You don't want to price a coin based on an auction where for all you know two wealthy bidders both fell in love with it. Past that it's just a balance of how much you like the coin and how willing you are to wait for the next deal to come along.

Thanks for all the great advice everyone! I'll try to remember to refrain from posting active auctions.

You're doing very well, Florin! Obviously better than me, lol!

Thanks for the heads up, Chuy. It can be hard to tell what the actual size is sometimes.

I did make my first ancient coin purchase a few days ago. It's a widows mite, which I'm really excited about.

I didn't even know it was possible to own an ancient coin until a few weeks ago. So, as a very new person to this, I'm very appreciative for all the help everyone here offers!

That was me two years ago. I was stunned that you could buy these things. My biggest advice is to be careful who you buy from on ebay; many coins there are fake. There are plenty of coins available from safer places that I haven't yet felt the urge to delve into who is and isn't reputable on there and the peace of mind is nice. My second biggest advice is to learn to wait. I've got a few decent coins that had I kept my eyes open a bit longer I could have gotten something nicer for the same price or much nicer for not much more. I'm still not perfect at waiting though. :)
