The plastic they switched to in 55 seems to be less of an issue IME. I have not removed mine from that packaging.
No 51's out there?

Ok, this was asked for. Going back to yesterdays posting for 1950, I removed one set from the original packaging. Aside from the little bit of gunk from the plastic (I guess acetone will remove this), the coins look really nice. The half is a bit cameo. So, here is a just removed 1950 proof set. 1951 coming up...

Nice! Hopefully the acetone will work as well as it did for me.
I will post my 52 set this evening after work.

Niiiiiiice. On the left '51 box, what does the $14 mean? I assume the after-market asking price at one point?

Ohhhhhh, now I have a problem. My 1953 proof sets are completely sealed in the box, and I see from the ebay sold listings that completely sealed boxes sell for about $100 more than opened ones.... So, not sure what to do. I want to take the pictures, but don't want to do that and hurt the value.....

$4.00? Was that the issue price?

I believe that the issue price was $2.10. According to the list in the Red Book, all proof sets from 1950 through 1964 had an issue price of $2.10. So, I would guess that the $4.00 price is from a coin store or at a later time.
