Here are the two silver Rupee's I scored last night.
I know absolutely nothing about these coins other than I think the design is a corker :good:

Looks polished, there are breaks in luster all over, scratches throughout fields. Still, the coin has nice detail and very little wear, I would say AU-55.

Two nice Rupees. The 1916 is Calcutta mint, 1921 is Bombay. The dot below flower head unnder the date is Bombay mint mark, Calcutta has no mark.

They are a beautiful design indeed. Some say the style reflects an Indian flavour but I think that is romantic afterthought. The style of the reverse is European Art Noveau, around the turn of the 20th Century. They are the most flamboyant of the Empire rupee, designed in 1911 the heyday of the empire; Edwardian, despite the monarch Geo V being his successor.
Often with coins, the pattern is used long after it was first made.

Indian rupees were just under Sterling Silver until 1938. Then mid 20th century they dropped to 50% silver, then Cupro-Nickel. I think currently they are made from steel.

Just learned this weekend, from a WWII pilot's memoir, that pilots and crew in the CBI Theater had pre-war silver Rupees issued in their survival kits. Idea was to allow downed crews to buy aid and food from the locals in Japanese-held territory without compromising them. Natives caught with current-date coins would get very rough treatment, or worse.

How much did you pay for those? They're absolutely beautiful, if they aren't too expensive I will be definitely picking some of them up soon!
