A couple of weeks ago while looking at listings on ebay France I came across a very rare Valens FELICITAS ROMANORVM AE-3 from Aquileia. The reverse is of Victory advancing left holding a branch and wreath, but the legend is FELICITAS ROMANORVM. RIC says this is a curious type, struck only at Aquileia, and perhaps commemorated a royal visit there or some other note-worthy event. I have seen two examples for Valentinian I and own one of them (It's listed a "Rarity 5" in RIC), but never one for Valens. Here's the auction: http://www.ebay.com/itm/Monnaie-rom...p=true&rt=ncI put in a bid before noticing the seller didn't specify if he ships to the US. I emailed him asking him if he would do so but didn't hear back from him. I ended up winning the auction since no one else bid. However, numerous emails later asking for an invoice and also asking if he's willing to ship to the US I have heard nothing from him which is very frustrating. So, I guess this is one very rare bronze I won't be adding to my collection. Paul Bulgerin

That would have been a nice addition. Too bad the seller turned out to be a jerk.

Perhaps he'd ship to the UK? Id act as middle man if you like (you'dhave to be patient though, its busy round here and I might not be able to ship anything for 2-3 weeks)

Thank you for the offer. I'll email the seller, but I am not hopeful that he will respond.

Wait for a better seller to advertise a similar coin.

Some French are famous for ignoring questions put to them in 'Anglaise'. Have you tried using google translate to communicate ? Anything too complicated will loose its meaning but a simple use of phrases to ask politely may work. The offer of a few extra 'pesos' for shipping and handling may help change some ones mind.

I don't agree, if the seller can't be bothered then buy from somewhere else. I go all out to answer all questions, no matter what language.

I've used Google Translate for all my messages.
I'm not sure when or if I'll see another one come along. When RIC was written only one example of the Valentinian I was known.
The specimen I own was properly attributed, but the seller didn't have RIC (I'd guess) and didn't know its rarity.
This one and the other Valentinian I were both coins I came across, one in a lot, that were not properly attributed. I've been collecting late Roman bronzes for fifteen years and love the interesting legend combinations on the coins of Valentinian I, Valens and Gratian. These are indeed rare and interesting pieces.

It's never over till the fat lady sings.....He still may respond. I've had stranger things happen. If all else fails contact ebay and use them as an intermediary.

If you really want it, then it Might be worth you just sending payment anyway Paul, send the winning bid amount and add on €2.40 (cost of shipping a package up to 100 grams from France to the US) and a small amount for his packaging. At least this way it forces him to take some sort of action.

Good News! I just got a message from the seller of this coin apologizing for the long delay and asking if I still wanted the coin. I've sent him an ebay message back (using Google Translate) saying I do. My fingers are crossed that I may end up getting the coin.
