Fiji used holey pennies and halfpennies from 1934 to 1968. These were so Natives could string them on ropes and the like or even wear the coins as armbands and neckbands!   Halfpennies   Pennies Even Brass ones from 1942/43 minted in the USA

@NumisRob: Thanks for the link - interesting story. The coin's flattened rims make me wonder if it was used as a washer (or something similar). Many US Large Cents had a hole pinched in them so they could be used as washers - maybe the same thing happened in France?
