French Cochinchina 1878, 1 sapèque. OK, so why would someone punch a hole in a perfectly fine French 1 centime coin from 1875? Well, if you are the French governor of French Cochinchina in 1878 and sit with one million 1 centime coins shipped from the homeland, and none of the locals want to use them because they are, well, French. And they certainly don't look anything like the holed cash coins people are used to either. Wait - there's an idea! What if we punch a hole in 10,000 of those coins, that must be a success! Nah, they didn't like that either. Now they just think we are trying to cheat them by keeping some of the copper of those perfectly fine French 1 centime coins ... I wanna go home, the food is strange here too ...
