What I find interesting about these (although I'm sure it applies to other coins in this topic) is how the holes go right through pictures and even words. It makes me wonder why the holes are even there.

P.S.: The date on the Bolivian coin looks like 1883 to me.

At least for the Australia, Bolivia, and Vietnam coins, the holes were made post mint, for various reasons. In the case of the holed French centime, here is a short explanation: http://goccf.com/t/180632&whichpage=48#3766160
