Early on in this thread, it was asked if there were silver issues of this genre - well, here's one that was actually meant for circulation, and was sterling (.925) in fineness, to boot.

Read this in the Readers Digest years ago, as a true story. a man walked into a hardware store. How much are these washers? He asks. 3 cents each. The owner replied. 3 cents!! for that price, I can just go and drill a hole in a nickel and use that instead. now you know why so many coins have holes in them

More nice examples. I have to say that I am impressed with the design they have worked in around those holes.

I may have posted one like this already here. 1923 Japan 5 Sen (Year 12 of the Taisho Era). For the four years this particular type were made, this final year saw the lowest production, and still 80 million were struck.

This type (can't recall the year) was one of my first Japanese coins. I considered it the most beautiful coin in my collection at the time (still think it might be so occasionally).

1946 British West Africa "One Tenth of a Penny". One has to wonder if it didn't cost more than a tenth of a penny each to produce these for circulation. There was also a proof version, which is a somewhat expensive coin nowadays.

1905 French Protectorate of Tonkin. A one year type, made of zinc, and denominated at 1/600th of a Piastre. This specimen is thinner than the published specification (0.7 versus 0.9 mm) but comes in at the correct weight of 2.1 grams anyway.
