I think $200 is the wrong direction - I would be buying these coins if they had moved down, not up.

A series of $5 for $5 and $10 for $10 coins, precious metal content optional (bimetallic? trimetallic? some other cool feature?) - wouldn't they sell in huge numbers through post offices and the Internet? Anyone could afford them, non-collectors, collectors, kids - right now, collecting modern Canadian coins is expensive!

The RCM is doing a great job at squeezing every last cent out of collectors. They still have their loyal followers who buy one or more other numismatic issues. Now they are capitalizing on those who are sold on the fact that they aren't actually "spending" any money on these coins, since they can (with some effort) get at least face value for them in the future.

Unfortunately, the end result we be just like that of hockey cards and stamps. Too many mass produced products and eventually it will likely seriously hurt the hobby. It doesn't matter that each issue is a "limited mintage", when they are coming out with hundreds of issues per year.

They should make a $ 237.50 for $ 237.50 coin next while there at it!
Lol

The 200$ coin is a nice design but its just getting to be too much now. It's getting too complicated to compare/price similar coins now. Like the Tim Barnard 2 oz coin (170$ price and 30$ face value ) vs the new 200$ coin ( 2oz also, 200$ face value, 200$ price ).

Putting aside buying these coins as a collector for their design - If you could chose only ONE of these two coins, which one would YOU pick for future resale value.

Thats pretty much on par with the mints mark up $100 for 1oz of silver , I want "one" but at this time cant justify buying it and with 20k mintage you will be able to get one later most likely around cost or maybe slighting above, I have the Tim Barnard coin and really like it , atleast that was one recent purchase I don't regret although some here don't like it, but that's ok to each their own.

Also the silver Tim Barnard 2oz coin works out to like $85 oz for a 5k mintage coin, not bad in today's world of over priced NCLTs...

Again this is not an investment coin... its purely an exchange of money. Its a cool thing to show you buddys/family that doesn't cost you anything. Worst thing you can do if you don't want it is go to the bank and get some bills. I don't see anyone complaining about the less then a dollar of polymer (or what ever it is) for the $100 bill you carry in your pocket. It also has the added bonus in helping you achieve Master Club status.

It does cost something. It not that easy just go to the bank and exchange for bills. I have tried and it took days. If an emergency happened and I needed 200 bucks this would be the hardest way to get 200 bucks fast. Its a hassle. I'm going to pass on this one. The only coins I have bought from the RCM are the 20 for 20 and the 100 for 100 and I'm even thinking of stopping the 100 for 100.

Its getting way to expensive. Must have priorities in life I guess

From the pictures it looks like the box is just like the boxes the 100 for 100 comes in. The cardboard ones with the white insert.

Actually it doesn't, with free shipping its exactly $200 for $200. I personally love using these coins to pay friends (I actually buy extras just for that reason). They all love getting a silver coin and usually gift them to there kids (which also love them).

Actually this is the least expensive coin to own as it costs nothing since it is exactly the same as having a $100 bill minus a minor inconvenience of cashing it in at the bank if needed.

I can probably agree this coin (and other X for X coins) save you money since it will help you achieve MC status much faster and then you don't have to pay shipping on other coins. I don;t buy all they much NCLT but I'm already 80% to MC status.

I have noted that each time a $20 for $20, or $X for $X coin comes out, there is always the same debate on:

1.) Is it really legal tender
2.) What businesses/banks will/won't take them
3.) The intrinsic value of the silver compared to face value
4.) The difference between having one of these coins vs paper (polymer) banknotes.

It would almost seem worth it to have a sticky thread here that covers these issues to avoid every time the mint issues one of these.

There are most definitely costs associated with these coins.

Opportunity cost, time value of money, value of your time and effort etc. etc. Whether or not you recognize those costs or the value you attribute to them, they exist. To be even handed, there are also some obvious benefits of the coins too.

To me, using them as payment to friends is no different that buying your buddy a toaster at Wal-mart and including the receipt so that he can return it if he has no use for a toaster. Actually it is a bit different because it would be easier to liquidate the toaster.

Let me pose a question to consider. Why doesn't the Bank of Canada get in on this? With just a slight change in their mandate, they could easily issue a 100 for 100 limited edition note and cash in, right?

I can't tell if I like or dislike this coin as of yet. If anyone plans on purchasing this coin could you please post pictures when it is in hand. Please and thank you. My biggest concern will be the different finishes ( the frosted, unfrosted and matte ) It might muddle everything up.

From the email I got from my RCM Rep, the image was not very good. From the description I would have assumed that I was looking at trees, similar to the seasonal maple coin. it took me about 4 try looking at it to get the idea.

Again, I really have issues justifying paying that much for silver, I get the whole no real investment (I have all the other coins) but have stopped the 20-4-20, and reduced the others to only 1 coin each.

I am passing on this one.

If anyone in the Metro Vancouver area is looking to sell their's for face value PM me I will let you know a bank that takes them.

I'll be getting this for sure... it will get me enough for MC status and looks like a nice coin. I wonder how many they will release each year.

I personally find it depressing seeing the 4100 silver coins in the Charlton's next to the amazing $100 Gold series. Talk about a sad state of affairs, when an ounce of silver and a quarter ounce of gold (and sometimes a half ounce!) have the same face value. I could see if the mint did an ounce for $50 face value, or even more interesting, a $30 face value. In fact, I think a $30 face value would grab a lot of attention.
