some ancient silver based coins turn up as
black. assuming no further cleaning is required
do people remove the black to reveal the silver?
or just leave it as black to sell on?

It depends. There are all kinds of silver. Sometimes some black can be attractive. If you have a coin in mind, post a pic and we can give you some advice.

Here is a silver tetradrachm from my collection of Attalos I @215 BC with a black patina. The black patina gives it more character IMO.

The only reason I'd remove the black from a silver coin is if it is obscuring some features. Echizento's coin is a great example of one that I think cleaning would reduce the eye appeal of.

The Severus does look much better cleaned. I probably would have left well enough alone and gone on thinking I owned a limes, but I'm glad some people are more trusting in their ability to clean coins than I am in mine. :)
