I figure this place is better for Irish notes than the World Notes forum (depends what you mean by Britain, I guess), and that you guys would see these more often than I would. Anyway, I found this 10-shilling note for $2 today, catalog says it's worth a lot more, but do you know what the actual market says?

You got a good deal, that should run $50-$75 in a US shop.

This is actually quite a collectable Lady Lavery 10/- note.
The fact that it has the ETO War Code (European Theatre of Operations) code M in a circle beside Lady Laverys Portrait,
makes it even more collectable and desirable by collectors.
The Book Value 2007 was listing it at £55 VF £75 EF.
The Central Bank of Ireland Banknotes modelled on Lady Lavery and painted by her husband was reproduced on banknotes of Ireland from 1928 until the 1970s. It then appeared as a watermark on Series B and C notes until the latter were replaced by the euro in 2002.

Assuming that 6/26/43 is the date of issuance or of the series, why would the Central Bank of Ireland:

1) offer 10 shillings sterling. I have never heard the Irish punt/pound as being referred to as sterling.

2) make the note payable in London?

I was looking at a pile of Lady Lavery 10/- notes at a London coin dealer's 2 weeks ago, and the cheapest and commonest ones in around Fine were selling at £15, so I think you've done really well!

Arkie - Ireland was in a currency union with the UK until 1979 when the Republic of Ireland joined the European Monetary System and the two currencies started to drift apart.
