I ordered acetone and will try it on the worst of the 2 to see if it makes any difference. The fingerprints are only visible under 10x magnification and a light when looking at the coin at an angle.
I will probable send both in for grading and keep the best one. I purchased all of the non error coins in PR70 and ms 67 and will buy a high leaf error to keep a complete set. I am not a big error guy, but finding it myself kind of makes it special. Funny thing is that I was not even in to coin and silver back then. I just did it on a whim because I saw it in the newspaper that the errors were only delivered to Dallas and I think Phoenix before they caught it.

Isn't nail polish remover acetone? That stuff is pretty nasty for most things I have ever experimented with (clear styrene plastic, paints, etc).

Aaaaaah, I didn't know that! We don't seem to have any in the bathroom anymore so I couldn't check a label!

To be clear acetone will degrade some plastics and most paints, but it isn't generally harmful to a coin's surface.

Back in the old days, we used acetone to assemble physical photos transparency for used in scanner for printing, then one day we tried that on 35 mm slides, with what happened next, we never try that again with 35 mm slide.

Great info on this thread. I'm new here. Unless someone already asked and I missed it, wouldn't it be helpful to see pictures of these fingerprints? I'm just hoping these fingerprints you're talking about aren't "baked" into the surface on the coins like this one.  |

Had you considered professional conservation? NGC will do it for a minimum of $30 a coin. In addition to any grading cost.
ANACS will conserve up to 20 coins for a flat $39 fee. Plus grading.
I have had very good results with both services.

The prints appear to be etched, they are probably not going away unless a professional service like NCS thinks they can get it out.
