Okay..I have decided today to start with collecting US coins.

Now the newbie question...
Is there a book similar to the Canadian Charlton for US coins?

I have decided to take the plunge, and want to get my hands on what is considered the "best" guide.

Thanks in advance for the help!

Most consider the " Red Book" the one to get.

As noted the Red Book is possibly the most versatile book for US coins. What you should possibly do to save money is to look for one that is a few issues old. They come out every year so they are mostly good for the information, not the prices.

I use the Numismedia website. It is constantly updated. Red Book is good for reference, but the prices are already out of date by the time it hits the shelves.

OH yeah, it is also FREE.

HI folks

Hijacking this thread instead of starting a new one... you have all made me a little more interested in what US coins I have in my little "keep" container, so I looked to see what's around for a basic guide, and it seems the one suggested here is just about the only one out there! Reminds me of the Scott stamp catalogs...

Are these Red Books beginner friendly? Are there lots of images to help understand markings, etc?

And what makes the Blue version different?

Yes red books are user friendly. The Red Book shows "retail" price. Blue Books supposedly show wholesale, or what you might expect to get if you were to sell them to a coin shop. I have't found either to be all that reliable as a price quide. I use Numismedia website.

Myself, being a non-collector, I think I may enjoy leafing through an illustrated guide so I can at least know what to look for when I find older coins in my change. I keep most of them aside anyway, but a little extra knowledge is always a good idea!

:-)
