Yeah, I would have called the police immediately, and then go from there. You already have a professional coin dealer to corroborate(witness) your story.
Of course I'd never ask how you could let someone you didn't trust around 80K worth of coins when you weren't looking.

Report the theft immediately. There is no difference if he broke in late at night and stole the coins. This is a serious felony. He is also black mailing you. The only chance you have of getting the coins back is make him realize he is facing felony theft charges. I am shocked you have not called the police already. Any attorney you may consult with will tell you the same thing. The attorney won't be able to do anything without a police report.

Call the police. The whole thing sounds bizarre and fishy.

Call or visit your closest police station immediately. Show them the text messages you received, and give them the contact information of the dealer he tried to sell the coins to. Any action you can take from this point on requires that you do, so don't delay it. Even if there is something else going on that we are not aware of, a theft has taken place.

1). Report the theft to the police. You will need an inventory of the missing items. At least get the theft on record ASAP.
2). Consult with an attorney to see what your rights are. The theft is a criminal matter; any "problems" you have with him, or had with him in the past, are most likely civil matters. Tell your attorney the truth, do not lie or embellish what has happened between you and the thief. The last person an attorney wants to hear the truth from is someone besides you.
You want your stuff back YOU have to take action.

If you have an email/text in which he admits he did take the coins and you have another dealer that will back you up that he tried to sell one of the coins, you really need to contact the police!
If he gets away with this you're out big bucks and he's the happy one.
$80,000... Wow!
ANA ID: 3203813 - CONECA ID: N-5637 Clean a coin that may be worth collecting? Please DON'T! When in doubt, leave it dirty!!
