Late yesterday afternoon I got a somewhat unusual 5p (on the left), I then compared it to another 5p from the same year and it soon became a bit clearer ....

Unusual-/-Error-5p-Coin-?

The marks from the milled edges are visible on the rim at the obverse & there is a lump of metal connecting between the Queens hair and the letter R in REG

Unusual-/-Error-5p-Coin-?

were there normally shouldn`t be anything as seen in the reference 2009 5p

Unusual-/-Error-5p-Coin-?

Has anyone seen anythig like this before ? If it is an error then what type of errors could they be?

I don't think the milling should be visible on the rim. What does the edge look like? Is it normal all the way round?

Hopefully some more experienced UK collectors will chime in as it's got me intrigued as to what's going on.

One thought is maybe it's been struck on a wrong planchet, but that wouldn't necessarily account for those marks on the rim.

I'd be keeping it that's for sure.

Is The Royal Mint minting smaller coins for other countries? If it's a wrong planchet, it might have come from there since the 5p is the smallest pound coin. What does the edge look like?

I think the blob on the forehead is called a die chip.

Better larger pictures would help.

I can't see the area in question due to the lighting.

The edge is milled all round just like any regular 5p ...

They do , however they dont usually disclose which countries they mint for apart from a few well known ones...

DaytR, can you get a larger pic of the 5p in question? Maybe a scan if you can't get a larger photo. I'm wondering if this is a collar clash.

EDIT: Realised afterwards I was looking for the 'fascinating phenomenon' 5p thread not this one

However, while on the subject of 5p's & edges

Has anyone heard anything, or even noticed infact, that there appears to be some wired edge 1992 5p's in circulation. (Just like the 10p's)
Weight and thickness are the same.

Unusual-/-Error-5p-Coin-?

-----------

As for on-topic... I'm sure I came across one... just have to find it and have a proper look now

Yes ! The irony about this is that I was looking through some 5p coins earlier and picked up on the 1992 dated 5p coins whose edges are quite distinct from those before and after that year . Great spotting RED !
