Hi, I am new to the forum and have enjoyed reading through other's posts.

I recently found a 1946 Jefferson nickel which I believe is a Mint Error.

There appears to be an "S" Mint Mark on the right side of the Monticello building, see images below.

Obverse:

Reverse:

Reverse - Closeup:

I could use some help on whether or not this is a mint error?

Thanks!

looks like PMD to me, and not a mint mark in the wrong place.

almost forgot

Wow that looks cool.. I know of 4 1946-S rpms but never heard of a misplaced mint mark but I am no expert...

Very interesting...

I am sure a expert will chime in...

I agree with Fuzzy, it doesn't look like the right shape to be a mint mark, so I'd say PMD, I could be wrong though

Also remember that year and mm uses 3 different fonts - MMS-002 (Trumpet tail), MMS-004 (Sans serif), MMS-007 (Sans serif)

Thanks all for your help. If it is a PMD, it really is bizarre how close it looks to a "S" mint mark. Still kind of cool to look at.

Oh and thanks for all the warm welcomes!

Rest in Peace

I agree it is damage. There are 2 hits on the coin next to each other pushing up metal. The pushed up metal imitates the S.
