Quote: I have question. Interested in the custom photo setups I have seen you post and answer questions. Could I find out more about that? Thanks RWA what I have found that works the best for me when taking photos is to put camera on a small stand and set it to infinity focus then shoot through a magnifying glass you will have to play around with the zoom and magnifying glasses distance from camera -rupp16

Quote: i want to look through coins and have a chance finding cool ones So what do you consider cool then? Everyone will ahve a different idea, bt only you know what ocin or design or what you like best. foreign I find most in nickels boxes. They have intersting designs. Find a lot of really shiny copper in pennies boxes. maybe AU or something like that, not much into the grading myself because if I can read the date, see the imagery and read the mintmark I keep it if I want it. otherwise I toss it back. Dimes...they kill your eyes so not worth it for silver from what I have seen. quarters.. all the states. halves. might find a commemorative, I haven't but others have, gold plated, silver plated, holed, counterstamped, NIFC, proofs, so many things could be found in halves, or it could be just a whole box of 1971.

Then you need to search boxes of each coin type. $1, half, quarter, dime, nickel, cent.
Bags seem to be better than boxes if you can find them. Though dollars will have mostly "golden" ones now with some SBAs in them. The most interesting ones I find are either old or foreign. Some recent foreign have been swiss coins in nickels, 2-euro cents and pfennig coins in pennies. Think I got some mexican and korean in quarters? and Canadian in just about everything. only boxes I haven't found foreign in yet are dollars and halves.

I have to wear reading glasses most of the time, but when I dump a roll of dimes into my palm, a white silver edge stands right out. I tend to look for the copper sandwich, and when I see an oddball, it's silver...I can edge search and re-roll $1,000 in dimes in around two hours. I've searched around $150,000 worth the last six years, I've searched all denoms since 1978, and dimes seem to be number one in consistent silver. Just sayin'

I quickly found that searching dimes, quarters, halves, and the dollar coins that it takes a lot of money. I usually just get a few rolls of these coins at a time, check them out, repackage them, and return them to the bank. Much quicker than getting a box and easier on the budget. Right now I'm using that strategy to put together a circulated state and territorial quarter set plus a ATB set. It's hard to get ATB Quarters here, somehow they really don't circulate to my home area.

Quote: Just sayin' You can say that all you want, but the box has to have silver in it for you to find it. Then youmust not check for proofs in dimes if all you are doing is edge checking?

I've searched around $150,000 worth the last six years, I've searched all denoms since 1978, and dimes seem to be number one in consistent silver At this point in time silver is getting harder and harder, and rare and rarer to find in any coin fashion be in rolls, bags, or loose. I've searched coutless rolls of dimes, quarters, and halves and I am searching more coin and finding dwindling returns for my time. However when I do find silver coin I am happy if its either 90% or 40%. It makes my day. Of the three, quarters are definitely the ones that have the least, followed by dimes, or halves. The thing that I find most interesting with the halves is finding NIFC coins. I usually keep one roll of the best finds and release the rest. Sometimes I think that I should keep all NIFC halves but that means a lot more money I'm keeping and if the wife finds out she'll probably be upset.

The key to success in coin roll hunting is searching volume. A roll here, a roll there, is great, but if you want the finds to be consistent, and reduce boredom, buy large quantities at a time. You will save time, and money. I've found over 1,000 silver dimes in the last six years, and also clad, silver, Cud, and clipped planchets, all via edge searching. One does not have to tie up a lot of money to buy coin. What I do is have several banks lined up and they call me when they have $500-$1k in coin, customer rolled, or boxes I've ordered. Compared to what many hunters buy, and what I used to buy, that's small potatoes. I used to buy 10-12 boxes at a time, once a week. I make one trip to pickup, and one trip to dump (at a different bank). I can search $1k in coin, dump, and get my money back all before noon if I like. It's a very simple system. I suppose it's all about what you want out of the hobby. If you want hundreds, or even thousands of silvers, UP the volume!

Ghostrider, if you don't mind my asking, how much coin, in dollar amount, are you searching annually?

Quote: Then youmust not check for proofs in dimes if all you are doing is edge checking? In general, proof dimes have a very fat, crisp rim, so they stick out. I have found more clad proof dimes than I have silver proof. I have also found gold plated, chrome plated, and annodized silver dimes. My younger daughter spent several of my clad proofs a while back; oh well I should've put them up so she couldnt get hold of them, ha.
