From my book reading, the issue with the Mint is having the dies too far apart or even non-parallel. I think they did this to try to extend die life. The was particularly important for the branch mints in the 20's because all working dies came from Philly. It often took months for them to get fresh dies yet they had huge production demands from management. Thus we have millions of poorly made cents from the 20's and I image this carried into 1930 somewhat...but quality was improving...starting in 1927/28 if I remember right.
No, I'm not planning on getting this slabbed Jon. It would not be worth the expense. In fact, I currently have this for sale in the forums as I don't need this one anymore as I have too many 30S cents in my collection.
