They will always be worth at least $1000.
Bank teller doesn't know what she is talking about.

Worth a $1000 yes but who really wants them. Bank tellers rarely see them so if they cant be sure its not fake why would they take them? $1000 bills where popular when I was younger they where everywhere.
My granddaughter works at 7/11 and she said they aren't supposed to take any more nickel dollars because somebody paid with a bunch of fakes and the manager accepted them.

I always take advice from my bank teller...the younger the better....all that wisdom. I love $1000 bills....try working in a casino and having to count $20,000 in $20 notes,....that'll give you a headache that G notes never do..

Okay first off!! a bank will ALWAYS take cash at face value for ANY Bank of Canada issued note.. it doesn't matter how old or what denomination!

That teller has no clue what they're talking about!

The average teller ... especially the younger ones may not recognize some of the older notes.. but just talk to the branch manager and they will take 'em.

With respect to fake nickel dollars... I doubt they were fakes "it's just not worth it to fake a coin that will always be worth $1" (Perhaps SPP can chime in on this one though as this is his wheel-house) versus the fact they may have been older Trade dollars... usually only recognized for a certain event or at certain venues for a short period of time and then they're expired.

I only have ever had one $1000 in my possession. That was to purchase a computer system in the early 1980s, when I was too young to have a credit card. I specifically asked for the $1000 from the teller, and hid it somewhere other else than my wallet, just to be safe.

When the 50c nickel pieces were easily attainable from the bank, I used to buy a roll a year and spend it, just to make a point of keeping it in circulation. Usually no problem at all, but it was always a fun conversation with the cashier.

I have no idea about the fake nickel dollars, it was just part of a conversation.
On the other hand people fake everything and there is certainly a few varieties of nickel dollars worth much than a dollar that would appeal to one of these "Fantasy mints" or faker mints. Also a nickel dollar fake would be a low profile in circulation, if your not greedy about it you could pass them off all day long, only a very few people would have a clue what to look for in a fake.

I think the Fake nickel dollars might have been Trade dollars, in the metro Vancouver area, during the 80s, the different cities had the mint manufacture dollars (same dims as a SD) so if you were to hand over a stack of nickel dollars, and had some of these in with them, they would be unnoticed. I saw some Trade dollars at a bank a few weeks ago, and they were in a pile of nickel dollars. When I mentioned that they were not really dollars the teller just shrugged her shoulders at it.

It didn't seem worth it to me to fake a coin that's worth $1. Maybe they meant silver dollars made out of nickel? But I do know there was a guy in the US who made counterfeit $1 bills for years before being detected (I don't remember his name though), so...

Edit: ace, looks like we were typing replies at the same time. Just wondering, what do those Trade dollars look like and are they actual legal tender?

Vanislekid,
have you ever seen one?
Knowing your age, I venture to doubt it.
If you wish to see one, I will be up your area going to CR in the next few weeks to see a friend.
