I got this sequential run of four C notes from my bank and noticed that there seems to be an ink smear on them. Does anybody know if this is from the printing presses? Does it do much to the value if it is?

The wiper didn't clean the printing plate enough between printing one sheet and the next.. But since the smears are in the margins I'd say no premium.

that is interesting. Very cool to find in a sequence.

I can't tell from the pics, but I wouldn't be surprised if those marks were dirty machine oil. The location of the marks makes me think that some parts got oiled or greased and it dripped onto the rollers. But I'm just guessing.

I have 10 consecutive one dollar bills that are almost identical to your $100 smears. Very Nice !

Though I'm not sure on value, getting those at your bank is pretty lucky. And they're sequential, too!

This is my belief as well... but will only be able to tell with really good close up shots.... The marks are all equal distant apart and exhibit the same trace characteristics... I believe this is from dirt or rollers from some feeding mech. suchs as an ATM or cash counter.

Here are some close ups... The smears seem to be the same colour as the ink for the serial numbers.

This has piqued my curiosity.
I've looked at the pics and started to post only to change my mind. So I finally asked my printing expert. He's got printing experince but only in the newspaper industry.
Anyway, he thinks that the bills were already cut before the streaks appeared and possibly were streaked with some semi-dry globs of ink on a drum scanner. This theory only works if the roller was the exact size of the note. But he believes it happened after the note was printed as it should be --- and then picked up some ink as it was being sorted into bundles. That may have happened at the engravers or elsewhere -- like a bank. Why there would be ink at a bank, I don't know.
However, he did say that if it was grease -- as I first thought -- that it would still be greasy and even after drying up -- it would still smudge or smear because that's what grease does.
I hope that helps some.
It has been fun to think about.

Its ink from somewhere during the process of printing the bills which makes it a printing error. There is not much of a premium from them.
