Hi All... So I have been able to get a 1897 ZUID, first South African Coins. I am just not clear of what what used earlier. There are signs of VOC coins, but they were used by all dutch colonies. Does anyone know if there was something distinctive about the earlier South African Coins? Were there any coins to the Orange period?

The Dutch East India Company had lost their influence in the world by 1800.

So I assume, as the British took control of the South African region, they would have used (British) East India Company coinage then onto Victorian coinage.

Coinage of both the Dutch and English East India Companies were used in the early days.

Followed by some British coins and then coins from the Batavian Republic which took over from the Dutch East India Company.

In 1826 sterling currency was introduced in the Cape Colony.

South African coinage began with the ZAR (Zuid Afrikaansche Republiek) coins (1874 - 1902).

Union of South Africa coinage started in 1923.
