I would imagine that a lot of them got taken out of the box of cereal
and spent right away.

I would agree with that but again, where are they all? Not floating around in circulation... Why? Because you rarely, "if ever" see them in circulation!

So if no one is looking for them, they must be sitting in banks somewhere, right?... or grandma's sock draw?

For the amount of publicity this coin has gotten over the years and considering it's value, it's had to believe more haven't shown up!

Some people have suggested, they are sitting in peoples collections or in dealers inventories raw and ungraded. If you or I had one, are you telling me we wouldn't have it graded?

Something is not right with the numbers here!

Does anyone else have a theory or opinion on this?

Based on the evidence, I believe that this is exactly the reason why more have not shown up. I also believe that as the population continues to rise, the value is not likely to increase.

Dealers would certainly have them graded. As for collectors, many including myself wouldn't because they are so easy to identify. Unfortunately, I had to buy mine graded from an auction.

Agree, as more show up the value goes down.

I don't believe most dealers know, understand or care about errors or varieties.

You are a knowledgeable collector, like me. So if we had a raw enhanced tail feathers Cheerios dollar and wanted to sell it, we would need to find a knowledgeable buyer. Most collector (in my opinion) are not that knowledgeable. Most collectors would want to see it graded in a slab to prove it's genuine before buying it. Plus, if I (we) thought we had a super high grade raw one, I would want to have it graded..... Wouldn't you?
