Hi all, apart from 2 edge knocks ( which I can accept )the coin is in a pretty good condition.
My main point is that on Vic's side there is quite a bit of " Reddening " around the letters & date, does this have a great effect on the grade or is it acceptable with only a small drop in grade. TIA.

The reddening is natural toning and should not impact grade. However, to me the coin appears that it may have been lightly brushed or cleaned at some point. I would guess - and please understand this is a TOTAL guess - a low AU grade with a possibility AU details.

I say this because there hasn't been a good reply yet and I hate to see people left hanging. I'm no expert in the series and it's possible this is a higher AU with a very weak strike.

Beautiful coin! Thank you for sharing!

Hi Scropper, thx for your reply.
The shield side appears not to have been touched but the Victoria side does have some areas of very light scratching visible with a 30x loupe.
Shame but still a nice example in fair grade, the saving grace might be the date as there is definitely something going on with the 2nd 6, it looks as though it has been struck over another number.
I am aware that there is only one known example like this and I am in no way certain of what I am seeing is in fact correct, but there is an oddness to it.
Thx again Scropper, I will try and get a scan done to see if my eyes are deceiving me or not.

Yeah, that's what it looks like to me! The reverse is uncirculated, but the obverse seems to show some pretty decent wear. Ah, an overdate! Well, in that case, definitely have it certified! Try to do some research so you know what variety to attribute so you can be sure to get that on the holder.

Any way you look at it, that thar's a beautiful coin! : )

Some wear in the hair above Vikkie's ear, otherwise quite a pleasant coin.
Good VF (or better) British, AU55 Sheldon. I think I have to agree with 'details', but I don't have a 30X loupe to confirm.

The red staining seems to closely match the hue of the lining of the display box. Acetone may help to remove this, if you don't like it.

Obviously a British homeland coin - The Australian sovereigns of this date were Sydney Minters. They had a .917 gold / silver alloy, and looked slightly paler than this one.

Is there a die number on this coin?

Good morning Sel 691, the die number is 23.
As far as the reddening is concerned, I don't mind it but if it can be improved then that's always an option for the future.
A grading of around AU55 seems fair, I wouldn't be disappointed with that at all.
The date phenomenon that I can see is definitely there but without a close up scan picture to confirm or dismiss its impossible to get an answer. That's my job for today, either buy a scanner or find somewhere to get it done.
Thx for your posts Sel & Scropper, back soon.
