I used to see this sort of rim doubling on Lincoln cents but never before on half dollars. Would this be considered an off-center strike? The reverse seems normal except for some rim weakness at about the 5:00 position.
The coin had some tape on the obverse and acetone was only partially successful at removing it. Maybe I'll try some Verdi-Care.
Do you think this is worth keeping as an error coin, or should I just release it into the wild?
That's called a MAD (or mis-aligned die), and occurs when the dies are not parallel to each other when they strike the coin.
So this is an error, but falls just short of being collectable IMHO; usually there is only a premium for MAD's when the devices get cut off at the rim.
Just a follow-up on this coin: I put it on ebay where it attracted a winning bid of $4.50. Minor errors are frequently posted on CCF and the posters usually want to know "what's it worth?" In this case there is a specific answer!
