Diversify is an important way of doing it, however grab the ugliest bar you can, lots of people buy gold for it's looks and its shine and all that, don't buy a proof sovereign because there is more numismatic value than intrinsic. Remember coins are usually nicer than a bar, so buy the bar it will most likely be cheaper!
