Is there a high demand on this year? Hence the dollars they go for. I ask this because I have one that I feel is high AU, only problem is there are 2 scratches on the portrait. Thanks in advance, cheers.

AU-50 trending at $900...scratches may lower this somewhat.

will the scratches hurt much on price selling this one if I decided too?

For a coin like this you would do better to get it graded before trying to sell it. It will probably come back with the Scratch comment though. My rule of thumb is to knock the value in half if the coin is impaired.

It's a nice example.. but that scratch is right on the forehead... and the eye catches it right away and is drawn into it.... I agree that it will negatively affect the value of the coin.. but I also have to say that you're holding a pretty nice example of a turn of the century Nfld 50 cent piece..

Kuh, that makes sense on figuring for impaired coins, ty. ag, I was hoping that since this is a very low mintage and tough to get good examples that perhaps it may bring a decent dollar. I bought a large group of Nfld coins, cad paper, RCM silvers for 210.00 There was a 1919 MS62 Nfld large cent, a 1909 AUish 50 cent and a few nice others in the deal too, so it was a no brainer to buy the lot. Cheers and ty.

It looks more like a EF-45, good luck if you are going to get it graded by a TPG!

Quote: My rule of thumb is to knock the value in half if the coin is impaired. the scratch is going to kill the value for that grade (i think by more than half). if you were buying a 1900 newfie 50 cent would you rather have the scratched AU50 @ $450, or a solid un-impaired XF40 for the same money or less? the location of the damage means you are (eye appeal) competing with coins many technical grades lower than yours. nice coin, but still a problem coin

Here's an example of your competition if you decide to sell. http://www.ebay.com/itm/1900-CANADA...m416f3ac734. That one has reverse scratch not as bad as yours. Others (slabbed and not) seem to be asking little more than half the trend prices I see on J&M. Not sure the reason for that.
