What a great thread 52Raymo! That's exactly what I needed! Almost all my questions were answered... Everything from auction questions to tax info. This is waaaaaaaaay more stressful than I thought. I think that guys 1870 CC half should have fetched way more... Thats the risk with the auction. Man, I'm just so perplexed here. I obviously can't complain here. I just found at least a few thousand dollars in the ground, not to mention the fact that statistically I could have won the lottery before hitting this coin. That being said, I'd love to see this go for a fair price. Beggars can't be choosers. I was offered $7200 cash money today. What do you think? Fair price?

I would like to say though that it would be "cooler" to have it in an auction from an article and documentary stand point. I'v already been shooting video of this dilemma. Not of the actual finding of the coin. But the realization and then the process you're currently seeing. Should be a great video... Hopefully with a VERY happy ending?

I'm certainly no expert on the coin industry, but if I could give advice to myself, it would be to slow down, pause, and take a step backwards. The right option will present itself in time. Gather the info and relax. It's a luxurious problem to have. Enjoy the process, and don't force a decision.

IMHO, your looking at an AU Details coin..problem free, this coin is worth over $20,000. If it were my coin, I'd put it in a PCGS slab and go through Heritage. It's a very important coin worthy of a key auction house.

The closer I look, the more I think they might call it XF Details. There's a little too little for me to reach AU, though. That should immediately put this coin into 5-figure range. This one is really worth maximizing via patience.

That's easily an XF details coin. If you want to sell, I'd contact GreatCollections. Great rarities like the '01-S will command attention and a strong price no matter where they're listed, and GC has the lowest sellers fees around, plus the best customer service, in my humble opinion. Ian is an easy guy to work with, I've consigned well over $50,000 worth of coins to them and I've never had a problem.
No matter where you sell it, you will do well. Congratulations on a truly amazing find.
As an edit, I noticed somebody criticized USPS. I've mailed $10,000 coins registered and not had a problem with them. Insure it, of course, but the risk of losing anything via registered mail is slim to none. I would say I have shipped probably well into 6 figures worth of coins via USPS and have had only one go missing and even that one turned up months later. Any fear of shipping this via registered mail is unfounded, in my humble opinion.
Another edit, I would turn down the $7,200 offer. I think you've got a $9,000-$10,000 coin there.

Yeah, I'm not going to make any rash decisions. After reading the above thread about the 1870 CC half flopping in the auction, I'm a little worried about that rout. But I do feel it's the best choice at present.

Oh yeah. Yeah I knew off the bat he was gonna flip it. The offer came from a coin shop. I have yet to meet with Dan. Sounds like Friday I might visit with him and get his opinion

I will! I'm just reeeeeeeaaally hoping when I send it in, it comes back with a details grade instead of un-gradable.

It will. All the major TPG's are assigning details grades and this one is definitely gradeable.
