can anyone shed any light on the origin of this medal/medallion? it's fair sized...1 5/8 inches in diameter and seems to be made from some sort of metallic composition.

Welcome! A decorative "fantasy" piece. The 1877 date would indicate an origin well into the 20th century, when numismatists would recognize the rarity of that date among Indian Head cents.

I found this exact medallion 45 years ago in NJ while I was five years old digging while standing at a bus stop with my mother. I held onto it all these years. Do you know exactly what it is? Where it comes from and what it may be worth? I would love to know where it comes from.

Most probably manufactured in Germany sometime before WWI. The Nurnberg factories turned out a number of imitation US & UK coins as cheap watch fobs.

I too have one of these coins. When my grandfather passed away I inherited some of his coins, this was one of them. I noticed some of them have the top piece that is used for a key chain but mine does not. Also, there is a lot of patina on mine-looks very old. I'll post a pic when I can.
