'Unresearched' is the seller's way of saying it is a tourist copy, and the buyer takes all of the risk.
I have NEVER seen an Athenian Owl with this sort of style, and I have seen quite a few.
Interesting. It may be that most of the seller's other coins could be OK. I would need to know a lot more about each one of them, though.

Btw, 'pishpash' - why don't you play "Guess the Emperor"? Okay, now you are waiting/preparing for 2015 but other times?

Seems he has withdrawn the phony owl - gives one a good impression of the seller.

Sometimes bad coins slip by good sellers by accident. He is an honest seller, wish more where like that.

Ah, thanks TIF, thought I had seen something similar to that owl. I am closing down now, 25 minutes to New Year this side of the pond but the interenet is running like a three legged donkey in the Derby. Happy New Year to everyone......

It could very well be a poorly made authentic ancient contemporary copy. I have seen authentic ancient contemporary copies made poorly, although granted, not this bad. And I would expect a modern fantasy piece to be made better. Generally, tourist copies, or modern fantasy pieces such as the one posted by TIF, are well made. They are made so you want to buy them. I can't see anyone wanting to buy the coin listed in the OP. So I think it is very possible it is an authentic ancient contemporary copy. Made by a non-Athenian, or more probably a non-Greek amateur, mint.
If true, and if completely silver, it would have been somewhere where they needed coins for commerce. And if you're making coins for commerce you naturally try to imitate the coins of the day that were already accepted in commerce. Owls were accepted in commerce from Greece to India. So it would be a natural choice. Although usually the artistic quality of contemporary copies were no match for original Athenian made owls.
Of course I don't know for sure if it's an authentic ancient contemporary copy. But I wanted to put that plausible idea out there.
