Been down that road back when I was running a forum. It does not take long for a popular forum to outgrow a shared server. A dedicated server should add very nice speed. Congrats on the growth!

The main problem is the pool for the asp engine. Since really the only reason to have a Windows server is if you need asp functionality, it stands to reason that near 100% of the sites on a shared server are sharing the same asp pool. So basically were swimming in a 25' pool with 100 other people. Yuck. Conversely, on a shared Linux server you only have maybe 20% of the sites using the cgi bin. Now you're only swimming with 20 people. Much less yuck. But within a few days we should be swimming by ourselves. No yuck.

Well, that's a bit of a relief- I thought it was just me and my stubborn refusal to upgrade from my dial-up connection! Rachel [:p]

A little wait in order to be a part of a fine forum like this one is a small price to pay.

You know thats funny. Everyone on the Snitz forum is telling me to convert to My SQL. Access DB's tend to get bogged down at about 90-100 MB. We're only at 17 so we have plenty of time to convert though. It's a shame, hindsight is always 20/20. If I had known the forum was going to grow like this, I would have chosen a php forum. Then we could be on a Linux server instead of Windoze. We'll get it all worked out though.

And guess what? I think by tomorrow evening we're going to have polls and possibly file upload back. Our new host is one of the main developers and support specialists for this forum's software. He knows just how to treat it!

Awesome! Much better! Even with my dial-up connection, I can tell it's faster. Before the switch I could play cards while waiting for the pages to load. Getting pretty good at Rummy 500, but that's beside the point... Thanks a bunch Bobby! Rachel [:p]
