"Does anybody really care about the nickel?"

What....really?

The simple answer is yes.

This will be my 38th year in my passion of collecting the nickel. Currently I'm very close now to completing the entire denomination from 1866-Date (P,D,S).
From these many years now I am proud to say I have also acquired an impressive library on this denomination.

Am I willing to accept change by dropping the nickel....Yes
Would I stop collecting them....Not a chance!

Well said. Last time I checked, plenty of use collect the Half Cent, Two Cents, Three Cents, and Twenty Cents coins.

6. Get rid of all coins. Just credit and debit cards.

I actually vote this. lol. Credit cards give me reward points to spend on coins. Spending coins gives me squat.
And... Modern coins are trash (IMO). All the great classics remain so we are not at a loss.

jbuck,

I still say that, if we get rid of pennies, nickels and quarters, that 20-cent coin/fifth needs the come back. I don't care if we do not have a 2-cent coin now, and that people suggest that the dime would be like the new penny. I WANT the coins to be 10c, 20c, 50c, $1, $2, and $5 coins. (Many cash drawers, from what I heard, can be set up for "six-coin" slots. Then would would just have to reissue a few of the large denomination bills to fill the bill slot gaps and go, $10, $20, $50, $100, $200/$500/$1,000.

I would not be opposed to a Twenty Cent coin if the dime becomes the bottom denomination. I just do not think it is necessary.

There will never be a 20 cent coin minted in the U.S. again for circulation, even if the dime is the smallest denomination minted. We have not had a 2 cent coin for over 140 years and I didn't hear cries to mint this again. I also think the nickel should stay, at least for now.

Round to the nearest Quarter and call it a day.

We should get rid of everything under the quarter. The new designs don't particularly appeal to me either, the new Jefferson nickels are atrociously ugly.

I brought this up in the another thread, how I (and probably a lot of you) round the entries on our tax returns to the nearest dollar. Rounding to the dollar has not hurt me or the tax man.

With that said, maybe we should be more proactive... Kill everything under the dollar, kill the one/two/five dollar notes, and bring in one and five dollar coins.

What about a system of nothing but coins? Who needs dollar notes?

All us guys would just have to start carrying coin purses instead of wallets.

For twenty, fifty, and hundred dollar coins, maybe we could get gold and silver back in to circulation?

Gold and silver will never come back to circulation. That ship has sailed.
