mysilveryears Pillar of the Community United States 1898 Posts	Posted 09/12/2015 3:36 pm The obligatory '1780' Austrian veiled bust Maria Theresa thaler. This is an iconic coin; forever frozen in time with the year of her passing. These have been continuously restruck since that time as both trade and bullion coinage. Restrikes have the odd silver fineness of 0.833. There are numerous minor varieties and mintmarks. Originals lack the 'S.F.' initials beneath the bust, and older Nineteenth Century issues have distinctly different features surrounding the eagles' beaks, varying number of pearls in the diadem and on the brooch. It is very difficult to accurately date individual pieces unless you are a true expert- which I am NOT. Every collection should own one of these, "imho". They are beautiful, historically significant worldwide, spawning numerous imitations, and the modern reissues are readily available at affordable prices. Posting for reference although neither of these is a true '1780' coin. The first example (from the early 1800's, complete with 'adjusting' marks) is close.
